Course description
Interpreting in specialized vocational settings requires more than general vocabulary—it demands a firm grasp of trade-specific mechanics, technical jargon, and strict shop-floor safety protocols. In this workshop, Deaf welder Johnathan Smoot guides interpreters through the high-stakes, fast-paced environment of the welding and metal fabrication trade.
Participants will explore fundamental welding processes—including MIG, TIG, and Stick welding—while learning the ASL equivalents and visual spatial concepts for technical terminology such as arc flash, heat zones, slag, and weld peds. Mr. Smoot addresses critical safety considerations for interpreters working in industrial environments, sightline management around protective gear, and strategies for effective 1-on-1 dynamic communication between Deaf trade professionals and hearing colleagues.
