Course Description
Navigating routine clinical care across the three trimesters of pregnancy requires interpreters to master specialized obstetrical terminology, diagnostic procedures, and sensitive patient-provider dialogues. In Part 1 of this obstetrics series, Deaf midwife Salerno guides interpreters through the medical, physiological, and interpersonal dynamics of prenatal healthcare.
Participants will review key clinical concepts—including gestational age tracking, routine blood work, ultrasound screenings, fetal development milestones, and prenatal nutrition—while developing conceptually accurate ASL translations. Salerno highlights best practices for interpreting 1-on-1 clinical consultations, managing positioning during physical exams, and facilitating discussions regarding high-risk factors, birth plans, and maternal health.
